Hey mate, whats it like working for them??

From my research, there an Australian version of Schlumberger/Halliburton/Baker Hughes.

Guess it depends what you do and where it is. They are tight with money. They are good at acknowledging your development potential or determination to progress. They hire a lot of contractors therefore if the work drops off so do you, however they don't like getting rid of people and many people come back after having breaks however short or long. Have only spoken with 1 engineering grad and he enjoyed his time on site as a learning experience. Not sure about his time in the city (just resigned a couple of weeks ago to work part time elsewhere).

Almost all contractors worldwide took a 10% pay cut earlier this year. A few salaried staff did also. Money can be a big thing with them.

Depending on what you do they can have international opportunities come up. I don't think it happens all that often but I know of a few who have been sent to work in Malaysia, Thailand, Saudi Arabia and the USA.

Easygoing work environment, flexible with hours: start and end times, allow plenty of extra hours (good if youre a contractor), I kind of take it all for granted now.

All up working for such a well established engineering company isn't so bad. There is a lot you can learn; but there are also advantages to working with the smaller EPCM org's too.

Sorry I don't know anything about S/H/BH.

Good luck :)

No at all. Slb/Hali/Baker are all oil-field service companies. The work topside to run cemeting operationg, take logs, work-over etc.

Worsly, as far as i am aware dabble a little bit in subsurface stuff – which isnt what slb etc do at all.

EDIT: With slb/hali/baker you can expect to spend 75%+ of your time offshore/on-site.

inaccurate statement.

firstly they are a US-based company (houston)
secondly they are a global company (four main international sites worldwide)

the only australian angle is that one of their main global sites is perth.

Just because they are listed on the ASX doesn't mean that they are "Australian". News Corp is listed on the ASX, and yet they're now incorporated in Delaware (I think).

Hmm... it seems you're right, WP is based in Australia (although a lot of their acquisitions, including Worley and Parsons, were from the US): http://www.worleyparsons.com/AboutUs/Pages/OurHistory.aspx.

- 1971: Wholohan Grill and Partners founded
- 1986/7: WGP acquired Australian and Asian interests of Worley (an American company)
- (year not known): WGP changed name to Worley (wt..?)
- 2002: Worley listed on ASX
- 2004: Worley acquired assets from Parsons, another US-based company, to form WorleyParsons

John Grill, the CEO, started in Australia what Worley Parsons is today and grew it from the beginning through a series of acquisitions, changing their name along the way and becoming a billionaire. Consequently, he lost half of his 1 billion dollars in the economic crisis :)

From what I know, they essentially just bought the name worley engineering from the US-Based Worley.

Just replying to the actual post here to the question "anyone else in this boat??"

There were 22 vacation students who worked there over summer and they are all in the same boat. (Myself being one of them) We got told the company wont know how many position there will be until october this year.

I have pursued other career options and am close to securing other positions in other companys

Another WorleyParsons grad here. I'm also on the QLD state board for the GDO (Graduate Development Organisation) – we basically run the grad program. If you have any questions about the program I can certainly point you in the right direction.

Unfortunately I can't really help with any recruitment issues (I honestly don't know anything about it, it's all HR), but I can suggest that if you want to improve your chances, go for a regional location (I think all the offices are in centers >100k people). If you don't like it you can always put in for a rotation to a capital city after 12 or so months (there isn't really any set time, but you'll be hard pressed to have a move approved mid project).

Cheers.

Can you give us more updates when you know how many % of interns will be accepted for grad positions in the future?

To be honest, I dont think everyone will be offered the grad role. And rest of the vacancies will be shared by a large pool of external grads with fierce competition :(

Hello User 236729,

I was at the Melbourne office over the summer just past. There is no % of vacation students set to get positions it is just who shows an interest and applies again. I would safely say that at least half have secured jobs elsewhere.

I landed a few other offers finally so Worleys is off the cards. I must say though the stuff i did there helped me get some of these jobs. Its unfortunate they are taking the knee jerk reaction approach to grads. But its consulting so if there is no work there is no work. No matter how good you are.

Hope that helps.

I rejected an offer from them about 6 weeks ago of 65Kpackage Perth. I imagine that 60-65 would be pretty average across the state by the sound of it.

Why would you say this? I think it depends on the type of work you enjoy. WP is a service provider where BHP is an operator, this means at WP you will be involved in more of an engineering\design\technical role where at BHP you will be involved in more of an operations\management role.
